MDOT Trying to Cut Costs by Cutting Plowing

MDOT is putting cost-cutting moves in place this winter that they want road commissions across the state to follow.

The agency is ordering county road commissions to cut back on snowplowing and salting on secondary roads.

It means road commissions would give high priority to highways but would limit secondary roads to just one plowing and salting for each winter storm.

Spokespeople for MDOT say this is an effort to cut down on overtime in the face of high salt and fuel prices, though fuel costs are down more than 25% from a year ago.
