Emerald Ash Borer Spreads to Schoolcraft County
An aggressive insect has spread to yet another area of the U.P. where it hadn’t been found until now.
The emerald Ash Borer has just been found in Schoolcraft County for the first time.
The state Department of Agriculture found it in Inwood Township, south of US-2 near Cooks.
That’s right on the Schoolcraft County-Delta County line.
It’s also immediately next to the last ash borer find in the U.P.
That one came 3 weeks ago near Garden Corners, on the Delta County side of the line.
There have also been infestations this year in Straits State Park in Mackinac County and a cemetery near Laurium.
The emerald ash borer is a beetle native to Asia.
It’s responsible for killing or damaging tens of millions of ash trees in 9 U.S. states and in Canada.
