Houghton HS Football May Move
Houghton High School’s home football games may be moving to Michigan Tech next year.
The Houghton school system says it has a tentative deal with Michigan Tech’s athletic department to rent Sherman Field.
The deal would be a 1-year pilot program, and it would cover both varsity and JV games.
Michigan Tech has told the district it’d be willing to rent Sherman Field for $350 a game.
That’s compared to the $20,000 price tag to run Houghton High School’s field for a full season.
There may also be a re-alignment of football conferences soon to save transportation costs.
The West-PAC is considering dropping Ironwood and Stephenson for 2010.
Lake Linden-Hubbell, Baraga and Ontonagon would replace them.
Houghton school officials say U.P. athletic directors have been talking about doing that for 5 years now.
