NMU Hockey Player Safe After Getting Lost in Woods

A member of the NMU hockey team who went missing in Ishpeming Township comes out of the woods safely.

19-year-old Andrew Cherniwchan is a freshman forward from Alberta, Canada.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says he was near the Big Garlic River last night tracking a deer.

When it got dark, he got separated from the other people he was with and got lost.

He called 911 from his cell phone a little after 7:30.

Dispatchers were able to pinpoint his location east of County Road 510 by using GPS technology from his phone.

County search and rescue crews led Cherniwchan out of the woods without any further incident.

Police say he didn’t seem to have suffered any harm while he was lost.
