Road Construction Plans for Eagle Mine

Marquette County business groups and a range of conservation officials gather in Ishpeming.

They were there for a briefing on the controversial Kennecott Eagle mine.

Kennecott Eagle’s citizen advisory group got together this afternoon.

The company would like to build a new north-south road from the site of the future mine to where the minerals would be loaded onto trains.

It would use existing roads in the area.

The company is looking at how to minimize its environmental effects.

Kennecott and other businesses would pay every penny of both the construction costs and the maintenance costs once it’s built.

Eagle Project manager Jon Cherry also talked about plans Kennecott’s parent company, Rio Tinto, has to explore 6 more possible sites and see if it might be worthwhile to try to mine them.
