Workers United Rally

The labor movement in Marquette County unites tonight.

Hundreds of area workers gather on the steps of the Marquette County courthouse.

The Marquette County Labor Council hosted what it called a ‘Workers United’ rally.

The workers on hand tonight believe the state is heading down the wrong path — specifically, that proposals from Governor Rick Snyder and the legislature are harmful to middle–class families.

RaeAnn Loy is a teacher at Negaunee Middle School.

She hopes Lansing takes notice of Michigan residents who want what tax breaks the state can afford to go to working families instead of to large businesses.

Snyder and republicans in the legislature are asking for sacrifice in a time of financial hardship.

Many of the workers believe it’s just lip service.

Kathy Carlson, treasurer of the Labor Council and a union member herself, says Snyder and most of the legislature are trying to balance the state budget on the backs of middle-class and poorer residents.

The labor council says as a show of displeasure, this is just a beginning.

Carlson says the group will have many other public events over the next year and a half or so.
