HOUGHTON — Work is officially underway on a new 8,210 square foot expansion and renovation project at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.
Aspirus representatives and community members gathered together for a groundbreaking ceremony on the future site of the new Emergency Room Entrance.

Aspirus Upper Peninsula Regional CEO Chuck Nelson said, “When we met with the community leaders to discuss what they would like us to do, in terms of improving this facility, the first and foremost is the emergency room.”

In addition to the new canopy entrance, the project also includes new private emergency care rooms, new physician and nurse workstations, and expanded triage, patient reception and waiting areas.

Renovations and upgrades will also be made to exiting rooms.

Aspirus Ontonagon CEO Mike Hauswirth said, “Well, I think you’re going to notice a lot more privacy. We’ve got private rooms—three private rooms, and just brand new—everything will be new, the technology will be great and it will be state of the art emergency care.”
The improvements will mean a lot to local residents.

Aspirus Ontonagon Board Member JR Richardson said, “For them not to have to travel to Houghton or Marquette and to have the services in Ontonagon is a huge benefit to them.”

The project is scheduled to be completed next March.
