Woman who stole from grandmother going to jail

MARQUETTE — A Marquette woman who pleaded guilty to larceny in a building is headed to jail.

Twenty–one–year old Cassie Croschere was given eighteen months probation and nine months in jail in Marquette County Circuit Court Friday morning. Croschere pleaded guilty to larceny in a building after being arrested for stealing a check from the home of her 86–year old grandmother and cashing it at the Marquette Walmart in July.

“I would just like to let the court know that I take full responsibility for the charges I’m being convicted of today, and that my grandmother has passed away this month, that I did care for her very much, and that I am mourning her death,” said Croschere.

“It’s, to me, just unfathomable how somebody could take advantage of an 86–year old woman like this and then stand here — or be before this court here today — and say they’re mourning the loss of her,” said Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Wiese, “and maybe she is, but she took advantage of an elderly woman.”

Six months of Croschere’s jail term will be served up front with the balance deferred. The court’s sentence is an upward departure from the suggested guidelines. Judge Mazzuchi cited a bond violation as one of the reasons for the increase.

A charge of uttering and publishing was dismissed as part of the Croschere’s plea agreement.
