Women & personal finance at NMU

Northern Michigan University is using the occasion of Women’s History Month to encourage women to take more control of their money.

Suzanne de Baca is a vice president with Ameriprise Financial.

She’s visiting NMU tomorrow night to give a presentation on personal finance for women.

Despite the subject, the talk is also aimed at any men that have women in their lives.

NMU economics professor Dr. Tawni Ferrarini says the presentation should be of interest to all students interested in one day starting a family, as the days of a man being an almost universal administrator of a family’s finances are long gone.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says women have greatly increased their participation in the workforce, and their earnings, since the mid-20th century.

Women are still under-represented in finance, but it’s expected to be a growth area for U.P. jobs in the coming years.

The NMU Center for Economic Education is hosting the event at Mead Auditorium.

It takes place at 6 pm Thursday, and it’s free and open to the public.
