Winter Storm Warning Continues
Heavy snow and windy conditions are part of a Winter Storm Warning that continues over west and central Upper Michigan.
Schools are closed in the city of Marquette where the heaviest snowfall has accumulated. Snow ranging from three to six inches in Marquette is just the base for the additional snow expected today, tonight and Friday.
The Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Baraga and Marquette Counties until 7 p.m. Friday. The National Weather Service is predicting snow and areas of blowing snow today with a high near 26. Blustery conditions, with a north wind between 20 and 25 mph will be even colder as wind gusts as high as 35 mph are expected. an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible during the day Thursday.
Similar conditions are predicted for the overnight hours and into Friday with new snow accumulation of another 3 to 6 inches of snow.
The snowfall is a welcome change in Houghton, but will it be enough for the sculptors of the Winter Carnival statues?
Houghton City Manager Scott MacInnis said the city has helped before when there hasn’t been much snow by trucking it over.
So far this year, however, MacInnis said no one has requested additional snow for the sculptures but the city stands ready for the call.
“We need probably a day or two lead time,” says MacInnis. “We will probably have to go down to the airport to get the snow but certainly if we get some snow in the next couple days, we will be taking it down to the beach and piling it up. We’re willing to help, whatever they need.”
Winter Carnival begins the second week of February but work on the statues has already begun.
