Winners all around: baseball team honored while local non-profits to receive funding

MARQUETTE — Some local non–profits will soon be getting a little extra help.

That help will come in the form of some extra spending money and was one of the topics of discussion at tonight’s city commission meeting in Marquette. The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will be supplying funding to Lake Superior Hospice, The UP Children’s Museum and the Marquette Maritime Museum.

“These are usually non–profit organizations that really need funding and it really does help everyone in the community in addition to these different agencies,” said Mayor Mike Coyne.

The funding comes from profits made at KBIC Casinos.

Another local organization also took the spotlight this evening. The Marquette Blues Legion Baseball Team also received recognition for will the Class A State Championship.

“They deserve it. They’ve worked hard for many years. Coach Swajanen has been a coach for years and we’re just very proud of him and particularly proud of the team,” added Coyne.

The Blues beat Gladstone to take home the championship.
