Forest Fire spreading in Chocolay Township

What was initially reported as a brush fire has now grown into a forest fire

A forest fire has started to gain steam on a thirty acre stretch of woodland between the Ojibwa Casino and Lake Le Vasseur, one mile east of Kawbawgam Road just off Snow Trail 417.

Firefighters from Chocolay Township, Marquette, Sands Township, and the DNR are on the scene and attempting to contain what was initially reported as a brush fire just after 11:30 a.m. A DNR plane is circling the area to provide a bird’s eye view for the fire and rescue team on the ground.

Fire crews and police personnel are asking those who do not live on Kawbawgam Road to stay off of it in order to keep traffic at a minimum as emergency vehicles continue to navigate the area.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops, including footage of the damage on ABC 10 News Now at 5:30 p.m.
