Wildcats reflect on opening weekend

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Despite being three hours away for two home games, the Wildcats felt right at home at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

NMU won both games against Wisconsin, winning Saturday night’s game by a score of 4-1. The Wildcats scored two power play goals and killed all twelve penalties in the series. A great showing on special teams went a long way in the ‘Cats two wins against the Badgers.

“We’re quietly optimistic about this team,” said NMU head coach Walt Kyle. “I like our talent, I like our attitude, I like our leadership. We just have to grow and keep getting better and better and finding guys to do the job.”

“Our penalty killers are huge for us,” said ‘Cats forward Darren Nowick. “(Jake) Baker was a key defenseman/penalty killer. Everyone came together as a group blocking shots, getting sticks in the lane, it was huge. (Goalie) Mathias (Dahlstrom) made some big saves– it was great.”

“The guys are making it really easy for me,” said NMU goalie Mathias Dahlstrom. “They’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing in our zone. They’ve let me see every shot. It’s not going to happen every time, but I think that’s such an improvement from last year.”
