ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP — Prom season is fast approaching, and girls all over are dreaming about that perfect dress.

Westwood High School is making finding that dress a little easier.

Saturday marks the sixth annual prom dress resale. Girls from the surrounding area have brought in their old prom dresses to sell for up to $200.

Considering a new prom dress can cost as much as $800, Westwood’s sale is a little easier on the wallet.

“Our most expensive dresses are $200 and when a girl comes in and they find exactly the perfect dress for like 150 they are thrilled. And even more their parents are excited because they have extra money for shoes and accessories to go with it,” said Donna Ballweber, Family Resource Coordinator for the NICE School District.

Ballweber said every year the sale gets more popular. Last year there were around 280 dresses, and this year there are already 100, with more coming in.

Girls who sell their dresses at the sale will keep 80% of the profits. The remainder will go to Child and Family Resources, who will use the money for supplies for their weekly play group at Aspen Ridge.

While the sale has altruistic causes, it’s also a lot of fun, and not just for the girls.

“Oh, every year I dress up. Every year I’m out there with the girls trying them on and saying ‘Oh, look how nice this one looks on, maybe you should buy it,’ you know, but we relive it every year,” Ballweber added.

The sale starts Saturday at 11 a.m. and runs till 2:30 p.m. Dresses can still be dropped off until 10:30 a.m.
