‘W’ Re-Opening Efforts Moving Along

There’s some progress in the long-range efforts to re-open the ‘W’ at K.I. Sawyer.

The community center that was once a part of the old Air Force base closed its doors last May.

The non-profit group Community Hand-Up has been hard at work trying to re-open the ‘W’, officially the South County Fitness and Community Center.

They recently received a capacity-building grant through the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development.

Lisa Johnson of Community Hand-Up says there’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes work going on lately, like looking for more grant opportunities.

But Community Hand-Up is still holding fundraising events, including a spaghetti dinner Saturday night at the Gwinn VFW post.

The group still has a target of raising $100,000 for repairs and a funding base before the ‘W’ can re-open.

Some of the future events they’re contemplating are a pancake breakfast and a cash raffle.
