Viitala signs her NLI to join Northwood

MARQUETTE – Hunter Viitala had a few different options on the table where she could play basketball next season. When it came time to make a decision, the two–time U.P. Dream Team selection chose Northwood University.

Viitala verbally committed to Northwood back in August. Friday, she made it official, signing on the dotted line to join the T’Wolves. With her college plans now in place, Hunter can shift her attention to playing one more season for the Redettes.

“It’s a little overwhelming right now, but it’s such a relief knowing that I’m going to a great school and I have my plans set for the next four years. I’m real excited to see what the future holds,” said Viitala.

“It was an easy decision on my part, it (Northwood) just has everything I want,” Viitala went on to say.

“I’m really excited for her,” said MSHS girls basketball coach Ben Smith said about Viitala’s commitment to Northwood. “Any kid that looks to play at the next level, it’s really cool to see them have the opportunity to do that.”

“I think that she has a lot of great basketball skills, but all of them are out-shined by her competitiveness,” said Smith about Viitala’s game on the court. “They know they’re getting a good one and I know they’re getting a good one too.”

Viitala plans on studying marketing at Northwood.
