Using a Service Dog

Having a disability doesn’t have to be debilitating.

An Upper Michigan resident learned that help can come in many forms.

Now, in the hopes of helping others, she’s sharing the journey that led her to find support from a service dog.

After the death of her spouse, Susan Shaver no longer had the companionship and assistance she needed to complete daily tasks — that is, until someone suggested she consider adopting a service dog, trained to help people with disabilities.

Shaver says it’s important to keep in mind that service dogs are not pets; they’re painstakingly trained to perform very specific tasks.

She says the Internet is the best tool to learn more about service dogs.

Online resources can help guide you through specific requirements and training needed to find your perfect dog.
