Urban Farming Meeting

One author and urban farmer from Oakland California planted her roots in Marquette this evening.

Novella Carpenter shared her story about urban farming. Northern Michigan University students and members from the community learned that it is possible to grown and raise your own food while living in the city. This event was just in time for “Down to Earth Week at NMU.

She gave a few tips about beating the winter climate while farming.

Using season extenders and green houses can extend your overall growing season. Also, when growing in the city, it is best to use raised beds to avoid any ground contamination.
