UPDATE: three rescued from breakwall in Marquette

Three people have been safely rescued from the breakwall at Marquette’s Upper Harbor.  Additional details are available now, that indicate the men were not on a boat as previously believed, but rather walking on the breakwall.

Officials on scene say the three men went onto the breakwall, over the safety fence and continued toward the beacon at the end of the structure.   As the weather turned into a cold rain,  the trio could not get back safely and were stranded near the light.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Marquette was notified of the situation by Marquette County Central Dispatch personnel.

A 45-foot medium response boat was sent by the Coast Guard to rescue the individuals.
A small inflatable vessel carried the three individuals from the rocks surrounding the breakwall back to the medium response boat and then to shore at the Presque Isle Marine.

Covered with blankets, the three were brought ashore by about 4:30 p.m.  After the rescue, the three individuals were taken into custody by police.   Charges against the three are possible.

A broadcast news story on the incident is scheduled to air Monday at 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
