UPDATE: Police apprehend suspect after a two hour standoff

UPDATE 4:19 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016 (EDT) — At 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Marquette County Central Dispatch received a 911 call of shots fired within a residence on Christine Street in Ishpeming Township, a road north of North Lake Road and James Street.

A 43-year old Ishpeming Township man was said to have fired gun shots in his home. Officers made direct contact with the subject in his front yard and offered assistance. The subject was observed to have a significant amount of blood on his left hand, but police say he refused to talk and returned inside his house. Shortly thereafter, officers heard two shots fired from inside.

Police then established a perimeter around the residence and assisted neighbors to safety. The subject exited and re-entered the residence several times. On at least one occasion, the subject came outside holding a long gun.

A request was made for assistance of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team, while patrol officers maintained perimeter positions for approximately two hours.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., after efforts to communicate with the subject failed, he was observed to exit the residence with a handgun and approach the area of the street. The subject put the hand gun down and picked up a remote speaker that was used by police as a means of communication with him. At this time, the situation had degraded to the point where immediate action was necessary to protect the subject, as well as officers and citizens.

Upon approach of EST members, who attempted to take the subject into protective custody, the subject failed to comply with verbal commands. Before the subject had the opportunity to retrieve the handgun, EST members moved in and took him into custody after firing at least one less-than-lethal projectile, a bean bag round. The man was treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics and subsequently transported to the Emergency Room at U.P. Health Systems – Marquette for a psychological evaluation.

No criminal charges were immediately sought in this case. An incident report will be submitted to the Marquette County Prosecutor’s office for their review.

Officers from Ishpeming Township Police, Michigan State Police, Ishpeming City Police and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area.

At one point, what-sounded-like gun shots were clearly audible on our live feed. As it turns out, it was police stunning the suspect with a bean–bag gun.

The suspect, who came in and out of the house several times, was taken into custody after being stunned. No one was injured in the incident, but the suspect was taken in by an ambulance to U.P. Health Systems.
