UP Land Conservancy Takes on Land Contamination

The Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy has been working to preserve both wild and managed UP property for the last 12 years.

Now the group is taking on the growing issue of land contamination.

The conservancy protects close to 3 thousand acres of land throughout the UP. The land is protected through easements which limit the use of the property or through preserves. Tonight at their annual meeting the conservancy board hoped to educate the public on a type of “green technology” that works to clean up environmental contamination. Its called phytoremediation. Lesley Putman was the guest speaker this evening and her latest research has been with little bluestem and crested wheat grass plants. What’s in store for the land conservancy this year? They are looking to purchase their own land for the first time.
