United Steel Workers strike to end hunger

ESCANABA — There are around forty nine million Americans struggling with hunger and one union in Escanaba is trying to ease that burden.

The United Steel Workers of Escanaba are hosting an event called “Strike for Hunger.” They’ll be gathering non-perishable foods, personal hygiene products and good old-fashioned cash donations. The starts tomorrow at 5pm and runs till 5pm Sunday.

“We noticed that there’s a need to help people less fortunate in the community. You know, there are hunger shortages all over. Last year was our first year doing it. We saw huge success just from our membership participating. We had the community see us doing this and we had a great positive impact on the community, so much that we wanted to do it again this year,” said Brandon Stromberg, a United Steel Worker.

The donations will be split between the Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul. Last year, the group collected around a ton and a half of food and it was all distributed locally. If you have some food you’d like to donate, you can drop items off at the USW Hall on 1201 Sheridan Street in Escanaba.
