U.P. National Guard Update

It’s been about two months since we brought you a week–long look at Upper Michigan Army National Guard soldiers training for a deployment to Afghanistan.

Tonight, we have an update for you.

The 1st Battalion 125th Infantry Vikings trained at Camp Grayling as they prepared for the deployment.

The unit merged with others from the upper Midwest for supplemental training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and in California as well.

The troops have started their transfer into northern Afghanistan.

Their commanding officer says there have been no real issues, aside from the usual bumps that come with flying a few thousand military members from the U.S. to Afghanistan.

The soldiers are deploying in waves, with continued training for the ones who are still stateside.

We’ll bring you another update on the soldiers and their mission in coming weeks.
