U.P. men sentenced after drug deal gone bad

HOUGHTON — The case against Hancock man who allegedly attacked another man when a drug deal went bad is now over.

27-year-old Joseph Schreiber was sentenced to 12 months in the Houghton County Jail for both Felonious Assault and Attempted Larceny in a Building.

Those sentences will run concurrently.

He was given credit for 66 days time served. Schreiber was also given two years probation and ordered to pay $1,643 to the victim, 29-year-old Andrew Rohrer.

The incident happened in June when police say Schreiber attempted to purchase marijuana from Rohrer illegally.

Rohrer was charged with Delivery/Manufacture of Marijuana and faces a pretrial later this month.


UPDATE– 5:07 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2016 (EDT) Hancock Police are calling it a marijuana deal that went bad. ABC 10’s Rick Allen has further details.

Two Houghton County men are both facing felonies after police say they began fighting following an attempted purchase of marijuana.

27–year–old Joseph Schreiber was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a four year felony. 29–year old Andrew Rohrer was charged with Delivery/Manufacturer of a Controlled Substance—Marijuana, also a four year felony.

The incident happened Thursday shortly after 7pm at a residence in Hancock. Police say they found the two men both bleeding from apparent knife wounds to their face, head and arms.

They were arrested and then taken to U.P. Health System—Portage for treatment. Rohrer is a certified medical marijuana provider but he is not licensed to sell to Schreiber.

The prosecution said Schreiber allegedly arrived to purchase the drugs armed with a taser and two knives…one of them a six inch kitchen knife.

Bond was set at $25,000 cash for Schreiber and ten percent of $3,000 for Rohrer. They are both currently lodged in the Houghton County Jail. They are scheduled to have preliminary hearings on June 17th.

HANCOCK — Two Hancock men are in jail after an attempted marijuana transaction resulted in a fight.

Officers from the Hancock Police Department say the incident happened shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Thursday on Hancock Street. Upon arrival, police found both men bleeding from knife wounds to the face, head, and arms.

The two men, ages 27 and 29, allegedly became combative during an attempted transaction to purchase marijuana from a provider in Hancock. The subjects were taken to the UP Health System – Portage and received treatment for their injuries. They are now in the Houghton County jail awaiting arraignment.
