UPDATE — Friday, August 12th, 2016 10:20 a.m. EDT

Long distance telephone service has been restored in the Upper Peninsula. There’s no word on what caused the outage.

UPPER PENINSULA — The Upper Peninsula is experiencing telephone outages over a wide area.

The problem seems to be isolated to long distance calls. Attempts to place a long distance call results in a “fast busy” signal and then an announcement that “all circuits are busy”.

911 service is unaffected. Cellphone calls are unaffected.

The long distance carriers have been contacted and are working to resolve the problem.

People are reminded that, if you have an emergency, or immediate need of police, fire, or EMS services; call 911.

If you have a non-emergency or a question, please wait until the long distance problem is resolved.
