Two USOEC members heading to London for Olympics

Marquette, Mich.—Former United States Olympic Education Center Coach Al Mitchell has been named to the 2012 USA Boxing Olympic Team staff. Mitchell who was the 1996 Olympic head coach will reprise his 2004 role as technical advisor.

“We have a young team, but they are looking good,” said Mitchell. “The world has caught up to the United States and no one country will take all the medals.”

Mitchell will be working with both the men’s and women’s Olympic teams and is currently with those athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to prepare for the upcoming Games, which being July 27 in London. The squads depart for England Saturday, July 14 for final preparations.

Also going to the Games with USA Boxing is Northern Michigan University and USOEC alumna Mikaela Mayer of West Hills, Calif. Mayer, who recently won a bronze at the boxing world championships, was selected to participate as a training partner for Team USA.
