Two teams advance to MHSAA state quarterfinals

Gladstone-Braves

DELTA COUNTY — What a crazy high school sports season it has been for the Upper Peninsula. Three of eight state championships in basketball went to teams from the U.P. and now, two teams have advanced to the state quarterfinals, the Gladstone Braves baseball team and the Escanaba Lady Eskymos softball team.

The Braves are in there third year as a program and have already established themselves as a powerhouse. After defeating Traverse City Saint Francis on their home field on Saturday, they will be matched up with a familiar foe tomorrow. Muskegon Oakridge, whom the Braves defeated last year in the quarterfinals before falling to Decatur in the state semifinals. A victory tomorrow would send them back to East Lansing for the second year in a row.

They would face either Buchanan or Lansing Catholic Friday morning.

For the Lady Eskymos, they shut out Cadillac on their home field this past weekend 7-0 and have a date with Frankenmuth tomorrow at JT’s old stomping grounds, Central Michigan University. A win would send them to the semifinals in East Lansing on Thursday to face either Portland or Carleton Airport.

We will follow both these teams and can keep you up to date on their trip to the state championship.
