MARQUETTE — Two citizens were recognized for their life saving efforts on the evening of January 20th, when they heard a man yelling for help after falling through ice near the Lower Harbor Ore Dock.
Maria Kiilunen and Darrin Koivisto heard the cries for help and called 911 then ran to the subject, the police department said in a Facebook post today. The subject was struggling and unable to get out on his own. Police say the pair located a life saving ring on the pier and used it to pull the subject to safety. They stayed with him until rescue units arrived.
“Darrin and Maria’s quick action and heroic response prevented a tragic outcome that evening,” the Facebook post read. Sgt. Ryan Grim presented Darrin and Maria with a Certificate of Appreciation for their Life Saving Efforts from the City of Marquette.
