Traffic Stop Leads to Police Chase & Drug Charges

A traffic stop of a Copper Country man leads to several different criminal charges.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department says it’s 24-year-old Allen Wiitala of Painesdale.

Police say last Thursday, he passed a school bus on M-64 in Ontonagon while the bus had its stop lights flashing.

When deputies stopped him, they told him about an outstanding warrant out for his arrest.

They say that when they told him, he took off on foot toward the center of town.

State police and the U.S. Forest Service helped look for him.

They found him at a home on Townline Road and arrested him there.

Besides passing the school bus, Wiitala is charged with driving on a suspended license, fleeing and eluding, and morphine possession.

He’s in the Ontonagon County Jail on $5,000 bond.
