Three Huskies make Daktronics second team
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Three Michigan Tech football players have been named to the Daktronics All-Region Second Team as selected by the region’s sports information directors. Center Bruce Tebelman (Dearborn, Mich.), left guard Frank Vruwink (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and defensive end Nelson Wienke (Kingsford, Mich.) all represented the Huskies among the region’s top players.
Both Tebelman and Vruwink both started all 11 games in 2014. They helped Tech average 404.8 yards of total offense and 191.8 rushing yards per game. The pair was also a big factor in the team leading the GLIAC in time of possession (35:18 per game) and ranking among the nation’s leaders in third-down conversions (48 percent). Tebelman was named All-GLIAC Second Team while Vruwink gained All-GLIAC First Team honors.
Wienke posted 48 total tackles in the regular season to anchor Tech’s defense, which finished the regular season second in the GLIAC in both scoring defense and total defense. The senior posted 29 solo tackles and 19 assists in his final campaign. The GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year notched team highs of 11.0 tackles and 4.5 sacks; his 11 tackles for loss accounted for 64 lost yards for opposing offenses. The senior is a three-time All-GLIAC honoree with 18.0 career sacks, fourth-most in school history.
Michigan Tech turned in a 9-2 mark in 2014, matching the school record for wins. The Huskies were also just the second team in the program’s history to earn a berth into the NCAA Playoffs.
