Tech Women\’s Soccer Starts with Win
HOUGHTON, Mich – The weather held off and Michigan Tech made it a truly historic day winning the first soccer game in school history 2-0 over Concordia St. Paul in front of a crowd of 1,380 fans Thursday (Sept. 2) at Sherman Field.
“We started a little slow with all the excitement and nerves, but the girls were able to calm down and focus and play our game,” said head coach Michelle Jacob, who recorded her first career win at Michigan Tech.
Tech started connecting passes throughout the first half but would have to want until near the end for the historic first goal.
The first quality for the Huskies belonged to freshman Katie Boardman when her shot just went over the cross bar with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Black and Gold got on the scoreboard first with a goal just under three minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman Melanie Hoffman missed with a header opportunity but stuck with the play and turned and fired a shot past Golden Bears goalkeeper Kayla Kuczaboski.
The Huskies would continue their offensive onslaught scoring the second goal of the match less than three minutes into the second half. Freshman Amber Hynnek connected on a loose ball in the box following a corner kick for the Huskies second goal of the game. She was unassisted on the her first career goal.
The Golden Bears\’ best scoring chance came with 24 minutes remaining. Freshman Brittany Kapala snuck behind the Tech defense and sent a shot wide.
The Huskies out shot the Golden Bears 15-12.
Tech goalie MaryBeth Spoehr stopped all eight shots on goal.
Kuczaboski made three saves and allowed both goals.
“We were proud to see everyone turn out for tonight\’s game. It means so much to have the support from the school, community, family and friends for our team,” said Jacob.
The pregrame festivities included a special jersey presentation. Coach Jacob awarded Michigan Tech President Glenn Mroz, and Linda and Jim Strolberg, who were representing Pat Nelson, with framed jerseys.
“I would like to thank Pat Nelson and President Mroz for their support and resources to allow us to have this unforgettable opportunity tonight. said Jacob.”
Tech will face rival Northern Michigan Wednesday (Sept. 8) at Sherman Field.
