Tech Volleyball splits Monday series

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team split a pair of matches in a rare double header Monday (Oct. 15) in Illinois. The Huskies defeated Ind.-Kokomo 3-0 before falling to Lewis 3-0.

“I’m very happy with the way we played for most of today,” said head coach Matt Jennings. “We really made Lewis, a good team, earn it. I’m proud of our team’s fight at the end of a very long road trip. I certainly felt we grew as a team unit this weekend after a really aggressive and confident showing versus Lewis.”

The Huskies opened the day with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 29-27) win over Ind.-Kokomo. Tech hit .379 and .406 in the first two sets compared to .114 and .333 for the Lady Cougars. The Huskies used a four-point run to regain the lead 17-16 in the third set, before taking the final three points and the match.

Shelby Jones led the team with 12 kills. 12 different players saw playing time in the three set match.

Attack errors would plague Tech in their match against Lewis. The Huskies committed 24 errors to nine by the Flyers. Tech gave Lewis a fight however falling 25-23, 27-25 and 25-16.

Shelby Jones and Aubrey Havlichek each finished with a match-high 13 kills. Havlichek completed the double-double with a match-high 18 digs, and Jacqueline Aird tallied 17. Sylvie Rokosh finished with 10 kills.

“Sylvie and Shelby were solid at the net,” said Jennings. “Aubrey and Jackie played fantastic defense and passed very well.”

The Huskies will host Tiffin Friday (Oct. 19).
