SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.  – Jonathan Kilpela broke Michigan Tech’s record in the 10-kilometer by over 20 seconds at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday (Apr. 4).

The senior from Atlantic Mine, Mich., finished in 31:11.94 to break the previous record of 31:32.77 held by Brian Stetter from the 2010 season. He finished 26th in his heat which featured numerous Division I athletes.

“It’s pretty cool to have Jon take down that record so early in the season,” Tech track and field coach Joe Haggenmiller said. “He’s worked real hard with his event coaches Tom and Tyler to break the record, and we’re pretty proud of him today.

“Hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come and that he can get to 31 minutes flat to qualify for the NCAA Championships.”
