UPDATE: SUV crashes into building

UPDATE: Saturday, July 20th, 9:45 a.m.

A 29-year-old Marquette woman was taken to the hospital after her SUV crashed into the side of a local business Friday evening. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says that the accident happened at 6:46 p.m. on Wright Street in Marquette Township. Police say the woman was traveling northbound in a 1998 Honda CRV when the vehicle suddenly swerved off the right side of the road. The vehicle traveled about 100 feet across a sandy area before crashing into Taylor Made Furniture.

The driver was treated at the scene and later transported to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment of her injuries. The CRV sustained extensive damage to its front end and the building was left with a large hole in its side.

Witnesses told police that the vehicle had been weaving and crossing the centerline before leaving the roadway. Authorities suspect that the driver had been using inhalants prior to the accident. The accident remains under investigation.

The Marquette Township Fire Department, Marquette City Police Department, and Northern Michigan University Police assisted at the scene.
