Summerhill resigns as Ishpeming Superintendent

ISHPEMING — The new superintendent at a school district in Marquette County is already saying goodbye.

The Ishpeming Public Schools Board of Education accepted the resignation of John Summerhill at a special meeting Wednesday morning. Summerhill recently accepted a position in the metro Detroit area in order to be closer to his family.

“Being so far away from my children was, every day, increasingly tougher to do,” said Summerhill.

“I think he’s a very passionate leader. I think he did a lot of great things for our school, but also I’m a father. Children always come first. I told him I couldn’t imagine being away from my child,” said Board of Education Geno Maino. “I think everything he did here, I think we learned a lot. I think he instigated a lot of great programs, and I hope we follow through on them. I hope we follow through on his lead.”

Maino expects everything to move forward as planned within the school district. Business manager Anthony Bertucci will take over the superintendent’s role until the board finds a new candidate to take on the job permanently.

Summerhill expressed his gratitude toward the people of Ishpeming.

“No man is an island, and you need support. You need people around you, and for them to kind of embrace me — it’s a small town, and sometimes that doesn’t happen in small towns, and they took me in and I’m grateful,” added Summerhill.

Summerhill came to Ishpeming from Center Line High School in Center Line, Michigan in July of 2014.
