Summer camp teaches horsemanship

NEGANUEE– Summer is beginning to wind down, so some local kids took the time to get into the saddle before school starts up again.

Versatile Horsemanship in Negaunee held its first ever horse camp this week. Over the 3 day camp, kids from ages 6 to 11 learned how to ride and care for horses.

Campers also experienced how to ride a horse using different saddles. There were also activities included games like connect the dots, played by painting on the horses.

Brandi Rolling, organizer of the event said that learning horsemanship imparts important values.

Rolling said, “it teaches them a lot of integrity and honesty.

She continued, “they’ve got to be soft and kind and very aware of their surroundings.”

“I like cantering on them and I like spending time with them and brushing them and feeding them,” Ava Rose Matheson-Pena, she added “I practically like everything about them.”

Rolling said the camp was a huge success and she plans on hosting 3 camps next summer.
