Students spending an afternoon at the castle

FELCH — Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Inspired by a reading assignment, students at North Dickinson enjoyed an afternoon at the castle.

Students in 1st and 2nd grade participated in fairytale skits, castle tea parties, and more, all dressed in medieval fashion. The afternoon at the castle was open to students and their families. After two months of planning and preparation, the students were able to experience medieval life first–hand. An afternoon at the castle transformed themes from a book into reality.

“This is the first one we’ve ever done,” said North Dickinson Teacher Carol Sgarlotti, “it all came from a reading story about homes around the world. One of them was a castle and the kids said, ‘oh I want to go there,’ so I said good let’s go there.”

Also by random selection, a king and queen were chosen. The history and reading lessons were appreciated by the students, but at the end of the day the favorite activity for most students was jousting. Students simulated the sport with helmets and fun noodles while going along opposing sides of a bench blockade. The afternoon at the castle helped engage students with reading. North Dickinson hopes to do a similar event next year.
