Strom family has a history of prosecuting in Delta County

ESCANABA — Delta County will have a new prosecuting attorney starting in January. Philip Strom was appointed to the position by Delta County Circuit Judge Stephen Davis.

Strom has worked in the Prosecutor’s Office for four years and is currently Chief Assistant Prosecutor. He has had trials in District, Circuit and Probate Courts. At 31, Strom does not see his young age as a disadvantage.

“I’ve had positive feedback and comments from law enforcement, defense attorneys. I’ve had a lot of support from our community and I feel very encouraged and humbled by that,” Strom said.  “I think my age is something that probably helps me with moving forward, the way that the practice of law is changing.  I’m very well equipped to embrace technology, to practice law in this time period, and I’m excited.”

Strom said becoming Delta County’s prosecuting attorney is something he has worked hard for and had always wanted to do.  Working with the justice system runs in his family — his great-grandfather, Torval Strom, was elected Delta County Prosecutor more than a hundred years ago.

“I’m very proud of my families history in the law and in the community,” Strom said. “Our family has been in Delta County for many years, both on my mom’s side and my dad’s side but to have a great-grandfather who served as the prosecutor starting back in 1911, and now over one hundred years later…it’s very humbling, it’s very exciting, and I’m ready to take over and encouraged at what’s to come.”

Strom is also very active in the community, including being a Bay College Trustee, and working with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

He will take the oath of office December 30th to succeed Steve Parks, who was recently elected to a District Court judgeship.
