MARQUETTE — There’s a stomach flu going around Marquette. In recent weeks, the Marquette County Health Department has seen an increase in reports of gastrointestinal illness in the community.

The illness is characterized by vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, it begins abruptly and usually passes within one to three days.

Most likely, it’s caused by a virus called “norovirus”, which is easily transmitted from person to person. The illness should not be confused with influenza, which is primarily a respiratory disease.

Doctors say to take preventative measures and practice good hygiene to avoid it. Hand washing for at least twenty seconds with soap and warm water is the best approach for people – both sick and healthy.
