Stelzer Signs Pro Contract to Play in Spain
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Former Michigan Tech men’s basketball player Ben Stelzer (Manitowoc, Wis.) will be playing professional basketball in Europe this upcoming season. The All-American and Academic All-American has signed a contract with a team in Coruña, Spain.
Stelzer inked a two-year deal with Leyma Basquet Coruña of the LEB (Liga España de Baloncesto) Gold. He leaves Aug. 21 for training camp which opens Aug. 24. The regular season begins in October and runs through April with playoffs to follow.
“I’m excited to experience a new country and continue playing the game I love,” said Stelzer. “I’m thankful for my experience at Tech and for everything that (Tech Head) Coach (Kevin) Luke, (Tech Assistant) Coach (Josh) Buettner and the program have done for me.”
Stelzer capped his four-year career with a stellar senior season in which he was named GLIAC Player of the Year and Midwest Region Player of the Year. The 6-1 guard averaged 22.1 points per game and ranked second in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (3.96). He helped the Huskies to a 19-9 record and their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
