MICHIGAN — According to the Michigan State Police, 13 of the 19 snowmobile related fatal crashes in Michigan throughout 2016 have occurred in the Upper Peninsula.
The leading causes of crashes involving snowmobiles include excessive speed, alcohol impairment, driver inexperience, and poor judgement.
Troopers at the Michigan State Police Calumet Post wish to remind snowmobilers of these facts and to also offer tips for a safer close to the 2016 season.
-Operate only at a safe/reasonable speed
-Do not drink and drive
-Do not ride above your experience level
-Pay attention to other machines
-Avoid frozen bodies of water
-Be careful at intersections
-Avoid travelling on roadways
-Wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment
-Do not ride alone
-Abide by laws
-Use common sense
