Snowmobile Safety Course

Now that there’s snow on the ground across much of upper Michigan, snowmobile season is off and running.

But younger snowmobilers are still required to take a snowmobile safety course before going on a ride of their own.

The safety class from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department covers several important areas that new riders need to be familiar with.

Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Errikk Decker says the majority of class time is spent covering legal requirements, what is and is not permitted on the trails and how to be a safe rider.

The class also covers general maintenance topics, from changing a spark plug to changing a belt.

Students of the snowmobile safety course must be at least 12 years of age to take the class and receive their permit.

Snowmobile season will be running until March 31st.

A possible two-week extension may be announced by the Department of Natural Resources.
