Snowmobile falls through ice

The Houghton Police Department continues to warn snowmobilers to use extreme caution near water. The agency reports that on Wednesday, at approximately 3:30 pm a 51 year old man from St. Paul, Minnesota crashed a snowmobile.

He was traveling on trail 3, the Bill Nichols Trail on Lakeshore Drive in Houghton, when he lost control of the snowmobile he was driving. The man was able to jump off of the snowmobile before it fell from the dock, breaking through the ice.  The snowmobile was recovered by Superior Service Towing.

Law enforcement officials and the U.S.Coast Guard are reminding snowmobilers to stay off Portage Canal. The ice is not thick at this time and always unpredictable.
