Snowmobile accident involving a truck leaves one dead

BAY MILLS — A downstate man is dead after a snowmobile accident that happened late Tuesday afternoon.

Officials from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office say 61-year-old Louis Charles Monaweck of Battle Creek died from injuries sustained in a crash on Plantation Road near Bay Mills shortly before 5:00 p.m. A group of snowmobilers were traveling eastward in a single file line along the right-hand side of the road, but Monaweck’s sled was in the oncoming lane as the group traveled over a hill.

The group met a westbound pickup truck as they crested the hill. Police say the driver of the truck did his best to avoid the group. Monaweck swerved to miss the truck, hitting a snowbank. He was then ejected from his sled and ultimately run over by the pickup.

Officials say there was no evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the pickup driver. Officers from the Bay Mills Police Department were the first to respond to the scene. An accident investigator from the Michigan State Police was called in to assist in the investigation. Bay Mills Fire and Emergency Connection also responded to the scene.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all snowmobilers of the following:

  • Snowmobiles must stay to the far right when traveling on roadways that are open to them.
  • Snowmobilers must operate their sleds at a reasonable speed at all times.
  • Alcohol and snowmobiles do not mix.
  • Please be courteous to fellow snowmobilers and respect private property.

Officials say the Sheriff’s Office has a snowmobile patrol and they are always looking to catch people operating snowmobiles recklessly or under the influence of alcohol.
