Smurfit-Stone Mill Will Shut Down Again

Word came out last week that one of Ontonagon’s largest employers would shut down again later this month.

And now it’s official.

The Smurfit-Stone Container mill will shut down September 19th for the second time in less than a year.

Most of the more than 200 employees had only been back at work since late May.

They’d been locked out since last Thanksgiving during another shutdown, for the same reason as this one — weak market conditions.

Details on how many people will remain at the mill this time, and how much in unemployment benefits the laid-off workers will receive, are still being worked out.
