Smurfit-Stone Mill Headed for Demolition
A scrap metal company is buying the Smurfit-Stone mill in Ontonagon.
And the new buyer wants to tear down the mill by the end of this year.
Despite its name, the mill’s new owner, American Iron and Metal, is a Canadian company — it’s based in Montreal.
The president of American Iron and Metal says the company reached a deal over the weekend to buy the Ontonagon mill.
About 175 people worked there until Smurfit-Stone closed it at the end of 2009.
Village officials plan to appeal to Smurfit-Stone not to sell to anyone who would demolish the mill.
