Smurfit-Stone Mill Closing for Good

One of Ontonagon’s largest employers is shutting down again, this time permanently.

The Smurfit-Stone Container mill will close for good on New Year’s Eve, 2 and a half weeks from now.

It’ll put 182 people out of work.

The company says the cost of running the mill is too high for them to operate at a profit anymore.

Smurfit-Stone officials say they’ll work with employees, union representatives and public officials during the closure.

The company is also closing another plant in Missoula, Montana at the same time.

This is the 3rd time the Ontonagon mill will have been shut down since November of last year.
