Shortage of Volunteer Firefighters

Another sign of the harsh times may easily be found in the number of volunteer firefighters available.

Generally, a fire department is comprised of full-time, part-time and volunteer firefighters.

Based on the region, some fire departments are having a difficult time filling part time and volunteer spots.

Fortunately, Marquette Township’s crew is filled continuously, but they can understand why it very easily might not be.

Township fire marshal Ron DeMarse says partially-paid and volunteer firefighters basically fulfill a second career without the paycheck.

And with the current economic state, many families can’t afford to take on that commitment.

Each firefighter, whether full-time or part-time, is required to come in twice a month for ongoing education and training.
