Services set for NMU student
Northern Michigan University has released funeral information for Arianna Alioto, the freshman who drowned Friday, November 30.
The arrangements are being handled by the Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery in Ariannn’s hometown of Columbia, Missouri. Visitation will take place at he Columbia funeral home Friday, December 7, from 4-7 p.m. A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 8, at the First Christian Church of Columbia.
Freshman soccer team member Arianna Alioto, 18, was found unresponsive in the P.E.I.F. pool just after 5:35 p.m. Friday, November 30. A student in the upstairs exercise area that overlooks the PEIF pool saw the victim in the water and notified facility staff. The young woman was pulled from the water, CPR was administered, and she was transported by local EMS personnel to Marquette General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
In a press conference with local media Monday, NMU Public Safety Director Michael Bath said the soccer team had been working out in the pool area earlier. The team, and lifeguards, had left the pool area. The investigation will involve determining where the on-duty lifeguards were and how Alioto ended up alone in the pool area.
An autopsy will be conducted. Results are not expected for two to four weeks.
Alioto was from Columbia, Missouri. According to NMU officials, she redshirted the 2012 season, but was expected to challenge for a forward or midfield position for the Wildcat offense next year.
