Sentinels prepare for national tournament
MARQUETTE — The City Insurance Marquette Sentinels won the 19U ‘AA’ state championship last weekend to advance to the national tournament next week in Lansing.
Marquette will be one of the younger teams trying to win it all. The Sentinels oldest player is only 17. Last year, the Sentinels finished in second place in the 16U national tournament, so this young team has plenty of experience playing in big games.
“This year we’ve started to cycle the puck. We work well down low,” said Sentinels head coach Jeff Cornock. “Our power play has been incredible, especially through the state tournament. I think we’re ready. We have two goaltenders that are basically even. I’ve been rotating them all year long… it’s been great.”
“This is a pretty good team. We all get along and I think the lines are finally clicking,” said Sentinels forward Allison Carlson. “I’m hoping we get to the championship (game) and bring home the gold this year.”
“Coming into this year we didn’t really know each other that well, but we all get along really well,” said Sentinels defenseman Sydney Cornock. “There’s no drama and bus trips are a blast. I just love being out here with these girls. No one’s really brought back the gold from nationals. Especially being a girls team, bringing the gold back to Marquette would be great.”
The national tournament is a round robin format. Marquette’s first game is on Thursday.
